He served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Mangolpuri constituency from 1993 to 2013, representing the Indian National Congress (INC). During his tenure, Chauhan held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Education and Social Welfare from December 2001 to December 2003, and later as Minister of Development, Revenue, Irrigation & Flood Control, Public Works, and SC/ST Welfare Departments in Sheila Dikshit's cabinet.
